Hello! I’ve bicycled for transportation since I was a kid. I have graduate degrees in optical engineering and medical physics. My day job at the hospital is teaching complex medical treatments. I’ve been a traffic instructor since 2015. I’m currently the Education Coordinator for BikeLoud PDX, Portland’s bicycling advocacy organization. In 2014, I founded Corvallis Right of way, a non-profit dedicated to bicycle/pedestrian traffic education, which I co-ran for 6 years. Since 2014, I’ve worked with attorneys who advise me how to teach the laws.

It’s a joy to teach folks who are new and anxious about bicycling, and get them confident! I also teach experienced cyclists, and bring them up to a new level of safety and understanding, that transforms the way they bike and drive.

These are life-changing, live-saving skills. Most people only know how to get from point A to point B by car. Every transportation mode has pros and cons. It benefits us to learn many transportation modes. I wish basic transportation skills were taught in elementary school. My classes aren’t just about bicycles… they’re a refresher of Drivers Ed and apply to all transportation forms. Learning is lifelong. Imagine if you never learned anything new at your job. I recommend taking a traffic class every 5 years, whether it’s driver, bicycle, or motorcycles.

I’m likely America’s most prolific researcher on the behavioral causes of driver crashes/fatalities with cyclists and pedestrians. I authored these studies:

  • Study #1: 20-year literature review throughout America and some of Canada, behavioral causes of driver crashes+fatalitites with pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Study #2: Behavioral causes of driver crashes with cyclists in Corvallis, Oregon, 2011-2015
  • Study #3: Behavioral causes of driver crashes with pedestrians in Corvallis, Oregon, 2011-2015
  • Study #4: Behavioral causes of driver crashes with cyclists in Corvallis, Oregon, 2015-2017. There’s no written report since this is a repeat of Study #1 with updated data. We released the results only in the form of this bar graph.
  • Study #5: Behavioral causes of driver crashes with pedestrians in Corvallis, Oregon, 2015-2017. There’s no written report since this is a repeat of Study #2 with updated data. We released the results only in the form of this bar graph.
  • Study #6: Behavioral causes of pedestrian fatalities in Portland, Oregon, 2017-2020
  • Study #7: Behavioral causes of driver crashes with cyclists in Portland, Oregon, 2021-2022

Email me to set up a class. Leave your phone number for a call back. In this free 10-15 minute consultation, I’ll learn your needs, and discuss which portions of the curriculum will meet your goals. Then we’ll find times we’re both available.
