How to become an instructor at Portland Bicycle School

Email vivek@portlandbicycleschool.com

Any experienced cyclist can volunteer to be a Bike Buddy (ie, ride around with new cyclists and encourage them). I need professional traffic instructors. This means you teach at a professional level.

I always seek new instructors. If interested, I’ll help you to:

  • get certified to teach through LAB or ABEA
  • ensure you have thorough understanding of laws as our attorneys wish us to teach them. You’ll read the materials they’ve provided.
  • ensure you have thorough understanding of traffic theory. I’ll ensure you’ve read the Drivers Manual and ABEA/LAB material. Drivers Ed is helpful, and I encourage you to take that.
  • know data. You’ll read studies.

It’s a sacred privilege to give this type of life and death advice. Everything you’ll say in a class is because you’ve read the study/law/theory behind it. It’s a long road to learn this material. I want people who take this as seriously as a career.

Consideration given to those with prior education experience:

  • having attended/taught Drivers Ed, motorcycling Ed, or large vehicle driver education (commercial, ambulance, etc)
  • teachers
  • those skilled at teaching children, our aging population, people with disabilities, people for whom English is a second language
