Why I sought the data
I need clear data on behavioral causes of crashes and death for cyclists. Along the journey, I also researched behavioral causes of crashes and death for pedestrians. Once I read studies from other cities, I researched my own cities via local police reports. I wrote reports on my findings to share with government and community. In doing so, I inadvertently became America’s most prolific (to my knowledge) researcher/writer on the topic. With this info, we can confidently focus education on the top causes of crashes/fatalities, and the hazard avoidance maneuvers drivers and cyclists can take to avoid them. -traffic instructor Vivek
2017
My first study was 3 studies combined into 1 writeup
#1) 20-year American literature review of behavioral causes of driver CRASHES and FATALITIES with CYCLISTS+PEDESTRIANS.
#2) Behavioral causes of driver crashes with cyclists in Corvallis, Oregon.
#3.) Behavioral causes of driver crashes with pedestrians in Corvallis, Oregon.
While living in Corvallis, Oregon, I first authored a literature review, where we compared results from 20 years of studies all around America (and some from Canada). We then compared the literature to Corvallis data. We were surprised to learn that the behavioral causes of crashes between drivers and cyclists+pedestrians are nearly identical throughout the country, whether big or small city, regardless of the infrastructure (with bike lanes or without).
2019: Two studies conducted at the same time. Behavioral causes of driver CRASHES with CYCLISTS+PEDESTRIANS in Corvallis, Oregon.
Still living in Corvallis, I sought updated local data, to see if anything had changed. We had three new years of new crash data to review since the previous study. We didn’t write a report, as the procedures were identical to our 2017 study. We just updated data via these graphs.

2021: Behavioral causes of pedestrian FATALITIES in Portland, Oregon
When I moved to Portland, Oregon, I wrote this study on the behavioral causes of FATALITIES between drivers and pedestrians.

2023: Behavioral causes of CRASHES between drivers and CYCLISTS in Portland, Oregon.
Still living in Portland, I wrote this study on behavioral causes of crashes between cyclists and drivers. Portland is known as an American bicycling mecca, with high-level bike infrastructure. To my surprise, the causes of crashes were nearly identical to every other city in America, large or small
